Anti corrosion activity from Sepia ink
Sepioteuthis lessoniania species were collected in the landing center of Thondi, Palk bay for anticorrosion activity. Ink was separated from the species as by standard methods. Batch of eight coupons made up of steel (1inch and 3 inch) were prepared by series of methods prior to the experiment. The coupons were used in the following order
- Coupon – control – (A, B)
- Coupon – painted with sepia ink (C, D)
- Coupon – painted with sepia ink as well as varnish (50:50) (E, F)
- Coupon- painted with varnish alone (G, H)
Experiment conducted in laboratory (in vitro) showed positive results but variation between different components on anti corrosion effect with control is not satisfactory. Hence, the standardization on anticorrosion through in vitro experiment using sepia ink is well not been established. Experiment conducted in open sea (in vivo) showed efficient results for the period of thirty days against corrosion. Inhibition efficiency (h%), Degree of Surface coverage (θ) and Corrosion Rate (Millimeter per year) were estimated. Coupon painted with varnish showed higher activity followed by coupon painted with ink as well as varnish and coupon painted with ink. Less activity of ink due to lack of sticky nature.
