GIS BASED ASSESSMENT AND MAPPING ON VIRULENCE OF MALARIA FOR ITS EFFECTIVE ERADICATION IN A COASTAL AREA OF TAMIL NADU, INDIA

RAMANATHAPURAM DISTRICT

 

Malarial infection data was collected through Primary Health centers (PHC) of Ramanathapuram district. 25 PHC encounterd with infection. The malarial infection was high in Pamban, Thangachimadam, Mandapam Thiruppulani and Uchippuli. 272 is the highest members beyond the age of 15 infected in Thangachimadam at Summer in 2011. In 2011, the Plasmodium vivax infection was recored as high in males in all seasons. 229 males were affected by malarial parasite in premonsoon as the highest value of the whole study at Pamban. 174 is highest value of female were affected of the whole study at Pamban in pre monsoon. In 2010, 108 males and 89 female were affected by Plasmodium falciparum in summer season as the highest value at Pamban. In 2011, medium virulance malarial strain was dominanted. 2007 to 2010 low virulance strain alone was dominated in all seasons. The highest frequency of medium virulance strain is 384 recorded in pre monsoon at Pamban. Overall malarial infection by persons in all five years were given in the maps. Rate of infection has been given as interpolation contour models in spatially. Prone zone is acquried through existing data and water resouces map.

 

NAGAPATTINAM DISTRICT

 

Malarial infection data was collected for all villages through Primary Health centers (PHC) of Nagapattinam district. All taluks found to have infection. Two important strains were identified in Nagapattinam district. They are Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. The malarial infection was very high in vedaranyam, Kilvelur, Nagapattinam and Kuttalam. Plasmodium falciparum was found in Nagapattinum, Tharangambadi, Sirkali and Mayiladudurai and infected more in the age beyond 15years. Plasmodium vivax was found in all taluks in all seasons. Persons who are above 15 years old were affected in Vedaranyam, Kilvelur, Sirkali, Mayiladuthurai. Infection on 6-15 years is sporadic. Childrens at the age of 1to 5 were infected in Vedaranyam and Kilveur. Kuttalam is being affected in all season. Females were highly infected by Plasmodium falciparum while males were high in 2011. Males were highly infected by Plasmodium vivax in all years. Overall malarial infection by persons in all five years were given in the maps. Rate of infection has been given as interpolation contour models in spatially. Prone zone is acquried through existing data and water resouces map.
